The Old Man and the SubwayThe man was old by anyone's standards. He could have easily been my father's father-- this was just from looking at him, of course. I don't know how old he actually was. I'd estimate ninety-five. Yes, ninety-five seems right.The Old Man and the Subway
He carried himself like an old person, too. Entering the train that late at night, any young person could have had the excuse that they were drunk-- but this man lookd as if a drop of alcohol would kill him on the spot. No, the limp, the stagger, the slowness of movement-- it was age, no doubt about it.

I work in a small room, about eight by ten, barely big enough to hold the table. Sometimes I see the table in my dreams. One second with my head on the pillow and I'm out like a light, leaving for the windowless box on rosy wings. Some nights, I'm sitting on the chair next to the table.
